Bregman has been connected to several teams, and after the Tigers agreed to a two-year, $35 million deal with starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, many wondered if Detroit still had the budget to sign the star infielder.
However, according to Evan Petzold of Detroit Free Press, the Tigers have decided to continue their pursuit of Bregman, even after singing Flaherty.
“The Tigers are still interested in Bregman after signing right-hander Jack Flaherty to a two-year, $35 million contract, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Free Press on Sunday night… The Tigers — led by president of baseball operations Scott Harris — have conducted their offseason moves around their interest in signing Bregman, as they declined to upgrade the offense with other notable right-handed hitters,” Petzold wrote.
The Tigers have focused on pitching this offseason, as Detroit has signed Flaherty, Alex Cobb and Tommy Kahnle but did also sign infielder Gleyber Torres to a one-year deal. However, adding Bregman would be a significant boost to Detroit’s lineup.
He also has plenty of playoff experience, as Bregman helped the Houston Astros win two World Series championships. At this point, third base is a big need for Detroit, and the Tigers remain in on the star infielder.
