Tributes paid to Roger Federer’s ex-coach after death aged 59
Tributes have been paid to former tennis player and famed coach Peter Lundgren, who has died at the age of 59.
The Swede’s death was confirmed by his two children, Lukas and Julia, who announced the sad news on social media.
They wrote: “Rest in peace Dad. One of the best has unfortunately left us far too soon.
“A coach, player, friend and father. An inspiration and helping hand for many, both on and off the court.
“The imprint you made and the memories will always live on.”
Lundgren was an accomplished player in his own right, reaching a career-high of world No 25 during his playing days.
The Swede won three ATP singles titles and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 1989, where he fell to tennis great Ivan Lendl.
However, Lundgren is best remembered for his time as a coach, and in particular for his work with tennis icon Federer.
Lundgren started working with the Swiss great in 2000 when Federer was still a teenager.
During that time the Swede guided Federer to his breakthrough win over Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001, and consistently towards the upper echelons of the men’s game.
Their partnership culminated with Federer winning the first of his 20 Grand Slam titles at SW19 in 2003, defeating Mark Phillippoussis in straight sets to lift the first of eight titles at the All England Club.
Lundgren and Federer called time on their partnership shortly after that victory, with the Swede working with an array of high-profile names afterwards.
He worked with Marat Safin in the aftermath of his partnership with Federer, guiding the Russian to the 2005 Australian Open title – where he beat Federer in the last four, before downing Lleyton Hewitt in the final.
Following the conclusion of his partnership with Safin, Lundgren worked for a short spell with Great Britain’s Davis Cup team, and later with the likes of Marcos Baghdatis, Stan Wawrinka, Grigor Dimitrov, and Daniela Hantuchova.
Among those paying tribute was former world No 2 and two-time French Open runner-up Alex Corretja.
“Very sad to hear of the passing of Peter Lundgren,” said the Spaniard.
“A great man; polite, friendly, very kind, with a great sense of humour and also an excellent tennis coach. RIP my friend.”
Also paying tribute were leading coaches Sven Groenefeld and Darren Cahill.
“With a heavy heart and speechless for the loss of Peter,” wrote Groenefeld.
“My condolences to the family and the tennis community at large. We have lost an incredible person that will live on within me for always.
“Thank you Peter for all you have given me/us. We all lose you too soon! Love Sven may you rest in peace.”
Cahill added: “RIP Peter. A good man with a kind soul. A helluva coach also.”
