With a win on Monday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers will be 8-2 in their past ten regular season contests. Meanwhile, San Francisco was just one winning overtime period away from an undefeated postseason record and a Super Bowl victory in 2024. Leading the charge for the 49ers during that stretch is quarterback Brock Purdy, the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, despite owning a 17-4 regular season record and possessing a ludicrous 111.4 quarterback rating in his career, Purdy remains one of the most scrutinized and analyzed signal-callers in the NFL.
Purdy is routinely considered a product of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s elite offensive system, surrounded by All-Pro caliber talents like George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel. While many morning sports talk show hosts and prominent ESPN figureheads remain skeptical of Purdy despite his fantastic career resume, one former NFL Super Bowl-winning quarterback believes the San Francisco passer is one of the best in the league.
Troy Aikman Goes to Bat For San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy
In an interview with Kevin Clark of the This Is Football Podcast, longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champ Troy Aikman shared his appreciation for NFL star Brock Purdy:
Troy Aikman on Brock Purdy, who faces off against the Jets in the first MNF game of the season: “I’m a big fan of Brock Purdy’s, and if he had been a first-round pick we’d all be talking about what an amazing player he is.” Excellent This Is Football episode today.
Aikman continued, saying that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Purdy lacks other elite passers’ arm strength and speed. Yet, he makes up for it with his decision-making and ability to read defenses and get the football in the hands of the team’s elite playmakers. Aikman, the co-lead analyst for Monday Night Football on ESPN, remains an avid viewer of the NFL, making him the ideal spokesman for the caliber of play presented by Purdy.
Following injuries to fellow passers Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco elevated Purdy to the starting role midway through the 2022 season. The Iowa State product finished the season throwing for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four picks. The 49ers shifted to Purdy as the full-time starter in 2023, with the passer accumulating 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 picks. He finished fourth in MVP voting and led the league in quarterback rating, touchdown percentage, and yards per completion.
