Pete Alonso bet on himself and chased a long-term contract in free agency. After months with no motion on a long-term deal, the slugger opted for a short-term contract to stay with the New York Mets. But Alonso’s deal came with an opt-out clause after the first year so that Alonso could reenter free agency in the offseason in an attempt to chase another long-term contract.
Given the fact that Alonso has been great this season, that looks to be the case. MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently listed the Boston Red Sox as a potential suitor in the Alonso sweepstakes if he opts out of his contract this offseason. Where things currently sit, Alonso is expected to opt out of his deal. “Like Bregman, it took Alonso until mid-February to land a deal, re-signing with the Mets for two years and $54 million,” Feinsand wrote.
“Alonso can opt out of the final year and $24 million of the deal to give free agency another try, and with 28 home runs, 101 RBIs and an .862 OPS through 126 games this season, that scenario appears likely.” The Red Sox need a first baseman as badly as any team in baseball. With Triston Casas struggling and then suffering a crushing injury, the Red Sox haven’t had a consistent star at the position all year.
Adding Alonso would be the kind of blockbuster move that would help their young and improving lineup. With players like Alex Bregman, Jarren Duran and Roman Anthony getting on base in front of Alonso, the Red Sox would be one of the best offensive units in baseball. If Boston can put together the money to re-sign its stars and then land Alonso, it could be the favorite to win the World Series in 2026.
