Red Sox appeared to be headed toward arbitration with one of their best players

The Boston Red Sox agreed to one-year deals with three of their starting pitchers on Thursday to avoid arbitration, as they signed Tanner Houck for $3.95 million, Garrett Crochet for $3.8 million and Kutter Crawford for $2.75 million.

However, Boston and outfielder Jarren Duran were unable to agree on a deal, and they appear to be headed to an arbitration hearing, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.

Later in the night, MLB insider Mark Feinsand reported that Duran asked for $4 million (lower than MLB Trade Rumors’ projected $4.9 million) while the Red Sox filed at $3.5 million

While either side could accept the other number at any time, this is a bad look for Boston, as they’re already viewed publicly as a cheap club after their shift in spending in recent seasons. Refusing to give a budding star $500,000 after an incredible season that included an All-Star Game MVP won’t go over well with a fan base that’s looking for more reasons to be upset.

This could also hurt their relationship with the player and negatively impact his season, as, at a hearing, the team will have to explain why they shouldn’t have to pay the player what they’re asking. That can only go poorly.
