The Philadelphia Phillies might have to get creative to reload their roster ahead of next season.
The team is loaded with high-priced veteran talent, from Bryce Harper to Zack Wheeler, but after a disappointing playoff exit in this past season, that leaves them with few ways to retool in what might be a final World Series run with their core.
One impact Phillies player that could be moveable is Alec Bohm, an All-Star third baseman with two more years of arbitration eligibility ahead. Bohm has been at the center of trade speculation this winter and a new trade proposal from Kerry MIller of Bleacher Report would see him moved to the Seattle Mariners in a wild three-team deal that brings veteran replacement Nolan Arenado back to Philadelphia from the St. Louis Cardinals.
“The Trade: St. Louis sends 3B Nolan Arenado to Philadelphia; Philadelphia sends 3B Alec Bohm to Seattle; Seattle sends SS Colt Emerson (Joe Reuter’s No. 35 overall prospect) to St. Louis,” Miller wrote.
On paper, this trade would seemingly give each team something it’s after. The Cardinals could hasten their rebuild with a top prospect talent, the Mariners could add some instant offense and the Phillies could upgrade on defense while moving Bohm.
But a deal involving Arenado might not be so simple. While he is a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner, a five-time Silver Slugger Award winner and an eight-time All-Star, his offensive production has taken a significant dip in the past few years. And after signing an eight-year, $260 million contract extension with the Colorado Rockies in 2019, it might be hard to justify his remaining salary.
While it seems clear that Arenado will be on the move this winter as the Cardinals look to rebuild around younger talent, he’s already reportedly blocked one potential trade to the Houston Astros utilizing his no-trade clause.
However, the Phillies are on his list of preferred destinations and he could be more open to a move there if the financials are worked out.
“One of the six teams on Arenado’s initial list of preferred landing spots was the Philadelphia Phillies,” Miller added. “For that to make sense, though, the Phillies trading away Bohm is a must, perhaps even in the same deal for a rare three-team swap.”
There’s good reason to believe both Bohm and Arenado will be on the move before 2025’s opening day. A deal that brings the latter to Philadelphia to replace the former would be complicated, but maybe there are some ways to make it work.
