JACKSON ROBERTS
Of all the big-market teams in Major League Baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies have been the least active this winter.
Don’t expect that to last too much longer.
The Phillies had a disappointing end to their 2024 season, and they need some added firepower to keep up in the National League arms race. The Los Angeles Dodgers just won a World Series, and the division rival New York Mets just added a mega-talent in outfielder Juan Soto.
Could the Phillies add a big outfield bat of their own to counter the Soto move? It seems like a solid proposition, given that the Philadelphia outfield was the only area of the roster not to field an All-Star in 2024.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s David Schoenfield predicted that the Phillies would ink Anthony Santander, an All-Star right fielder with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, to a three-year, $69 million contract.
“If the Phillies don’t land (Alex) Bregman, Santander looms as a good backup option,” Schoenfield said.
“The Phillies are going to do something — as they should, with a veteran, win-now roster that fell disappointingly short in the playoffs the past two seasons. Santander deepens a lineup that, while not necessarily short on power, hit fewer home runs than the Mets and Atlanta Braves in 2024.”
Santander, 30, hit a career-high 44 home runs this past season, trailing only Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani for the MLB lead. He’s not a consistent on-base threat, producing just a .305 OBP in 2024, but he makes up for it with consistent power that should play perfectly at Citizens Bank Park.
Something has to be done to improve this Phillies outfield, and Santander is as solid an option as there is on the market right now. Don’t be surprised if the lifelong Oriole makes the trip up I-95 this winter.
