KENDALL CAPPS
The Philadelphia Phillies were considered a serious threat to win the World Series in October. However, another early postseason exit has caused many to believe a shakeup is in order. Pitching is a key concern for the Phillies, and they just may have the pieces to improve in a big way.
The Houston Astros will likely seek help at third base once Alex Bregman signs elsewhere. That is where the Phillies and Alex Bohm fit right in.
Rumors have swirled that Philadelphia is shopping the 28-year-old infielder. He is certain to garner a ton of interest, too. Bohm is coming off his first All-Star season in which he hit .280 with 15 home runs and 97 RBIs. He also finished second in the National League with 44 doubles and posted a strong 3.0 WAR in 2024.
The question remains, then, what can Philadelphia expect in return?
The Phillies need assistance both in the bullpen and starting rotation. According to Newsweek, either former closer Ryan Pressly or starter Framber Valdez would be on the table.
“In the instance that it’s Pressly, the Astros would have to attach other players with the righty,” Zach Pressnell wrote.
“Valdez would make the most sense. A Valdez for Bohm trade has a lot of the groundwork for a deal that could come to fruition this winter.”
The Astros’ lefty is a workhorse. He has pitched between 176 and 201 innings in each of the last three seasons. He also does not come with the same wear and tear that traditional 31-year-old starters would. In his first few years in the big leagues, he mostly worked out of the pen in Houston.
Following a sluggish 2024 start, Valdez finished 15-7 with a 2.91 ERA and 169 strikeouts.
