The New England Patriots fell 40-7 on Saturday to the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium, dropping their sixth game in a row and seventh in their last eight games.

While New England played horrendously, their fans voiced their displeasure with the product on the field with loud boos, and they specifically called out head coach Jerod Mayo with “Fire Mayo” chants late in the game.

The Patriots promoted Mayo from linebackers coach this past offseason, allowing him to replace Bill Belichick after 24 seasons as the team’s head coach.

It’s clear that New England didn’t have the talent to have a competitive season this year, but their decision-making both on the field and in their hires has been questionable. That falls on Mayo.

On top of that, Mayo hasn’t handled his media obligations very well, often walking back or having to clarify comments he made that could negatively impact his players or fellow coaches.

All of the reports have been that Patriots owner Robert Kraft isn’t planning on firing Mayo, but a 33-point loss at home in the middle of their worst season since 1992 is hard to stomach.
