The Carolina Panthers’ defense is in the midst of a rebuild, but adding experienced veterans could provide immediate improvement. One player who could be a perfect fit? Super Bowl champion cornerback Darius Slay.
Slay, set to be released by the Philadelphia Eagles due to salary cap concerns, could be a low-cost, one-year addition to the Panthers’ roster. Despite his age, the 32-year-old is still a proven playmaker. Last season, he had 3 interceptions and 14 pass deflections, proving he can still perform at a high level. A team-friendly deal would allow Carolina to address other needs while still benefiting from Slay’s leadership in the secondary.
Currently, the Panthers only have Jaycee Horn as their top cornerback under contract. With other key options like Mike Jackson and Dane Jackson either free agents or cut, adding Slay would provide much-needed depth. His experience would complement Horn, creating a formidable duo that can defend against top-tier wide receivers.
Though Slay wouldn’t be a long-term solution, his presence could be invaluable in allowing the Panthers to focus on other areas of their defense. This would free up draft capital for strengthening the defensive line, linebackers, and edge rushers, all while building a more cohesive unit for years to come.
The Panthers are primed to take advantage of cap casualties like Slay, and signing him could be a move that pays dividends both now and in the future.
