Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back La’Mical Perine is signing with the Green Bay Packers to their practice squad, according to the NFL wire. Perine, a veteran, finds a new home after losing out on a practice squad spot to Jonathan Ward and the incoming Boston Scott.
Perine joined the Steelers halfway through the spring as a veteran addition. The fourth-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Florida, Perine played his first two years in the Big Apple. Since then, however, he has bounced around, going from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Miami Dolphins in 2022. By the end of that same season, Perine was with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he would win two Super Bowls. However, the Chiefs released him in May, which is when the Steelers signed him.
Perine is the cousin of NFL running back Samaje Perine and former Steelers linebacker Myles Jack. Those are the NFL bloodlines that the Steelers like when they acquire players, even on the practice squad. The Mobile, Alabama, native was the son of a former Auburn basketball player.
The Steelers, between their practice squad and the active roster, have five running backs that all bring different skill sets to the table. Perine was solid in the preseason and played a lot once Jaylen Warren and Ward suffered injuries, but Ward’s special teams value and strong training camp earned him a spot over Perine.
