They did sign Charlie Morton to a one-year, $15 million contract, but they are going to need more than that. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed the idea of them swapping Ryan Mountcastle with Luis Castillo in a one-for-one trade with the Seattle Mariners.
“There’s nothing out of left field about this one, as Jon Morosi of MLB Network has reported that the Orioles and Mariners have been talking about Castillo,” Rymer wrote.
“Yes, he’s 32 and he was basically league-average in 2024. But he’s typically good for 30-plus starts, and that fastball of his is still an effective weapon.”
Castillo went 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA in 30 starts with the Mariners in 2024. He also pitched 175 1/3 innings and recorded 175 strikeouts.
Baltimore will need him to stay healthy in 2025, but if he can do that, he could be the ace in the hole that they need to replace Burnes.
The right-hander is a three-time All-Star and has Cy Young potential. This is what Baltimore needs if they want to catch the New York Yankees in the AL East.
Losing Mountcastle wouldn’t hurt too significantly for the Orioles either, as they have top prospect Coby Mayo waiting in the wings and ready to claim an everyday spot in the lineup.
It will be interesting to see if this trade ends up happening.
