Caleb Okoli arrived at Leicester City from Atalanta in the summer transfer window.
After suffering relegation in his loan stint at Frosinone in the 2023/24 season, he has adapted to life in the Premier League quickly, playing nine times already.
The centre-back spoke to Cronache di Spogliatoio at the weekend about his time in England and at the King Power Stadium so far. He’s clearly been impressed by what he’s found at Leicester City and in the Premier League generally.
When asked about the training facilities in England, the Italian said: “I was shocked when I saw it for the first time. I grew up in Zingonia [Atalanta’s training setup] and until this summer I thought that centres like that were the best.
“But when I arrived here I was speechless, I assure you that we are on another planet . There are 21 pitches and one of them is covered. Then we have two gyms where nothing is missing and also in terms of recovery we have everything, from saunas to swimming pools.”
He also reflected on the intensity of football in the English top flight, agreeing with others that the game is played at a fast pace.
“It’s true what they say, the Premier League is played at a different intensity. Here everyone is used to ‘always going at 3000’ and there is a very high athletic level , but it’s not just that. The technical level is also incredible.”
The 23-year-old also went on to speak about Erling Haaland, explaining he wants to play against the Norwegian soon.
“Every game I face very strong players, like Haaland, who I can’t wait to mark, and I can never allow myself to let my guard down . The team that has impressed me the most so far, however, has been Arsenal. We played at the Emirates and it was really tough, because they have this ‘oppressive’ style of play.”
Okoli is enjoying life in England and at Leicester City, and now faces a battle to convince new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy that he should be a big part of the plans going forward.
His next goal should be to convince the new manager and break into the first-team again, making the most of the opportunities he gets.
