Due to the Suns’ persistent shortcomings, the organization could decide to trade their accomplished 6-foot-11 forward to the Anthony Edwards-led Minnesota Timberwolves this summer.
“Anthony Edwards gets to play with his GOAT as the new Dur (Kevin Durant)-Ant duo terrorizes opposing defenses,” Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz wrote Monday.
“With Rudy Gobert protecting the paint and the window for Naz Reid and Julius Randle to return still open, this would be a big swing for the Wolves to try and get back to the West Finals and beyond.”
“Phoenix would save $11.3 million in player salary not to mention a ton of luxury tax money while getting three good, young players and a mid first-round pick in this 2025 draft. Brooklyn (Nets) uses its cap space to take on (Mike) Conley and receives a high second round pick as a reward.”
Swartz’s fascinating trade idea would send Durant to the Timberwolves for Jaden McDaniels, Rob Dillingham, Donte DiVincenzo, and a 2025 first-round pick (top-13 protected via Detroit Pistons).
Durant has bolstered his Hall-of-Fame resume with the Suns, receiving two All-Star nods and becoming the eighth player in NBA history to score 30,000 points.
However, while Durant’s accolades are noteworthy, they haven’t resulted in the necessary team success, likely causing the Suns to alter their plans drastically.
The Suns boast a troubling 30-35 record through 65 games and are headed toward another frustrating playoff showing.
While Phoenix wouldn’t hit the jackpot with McDaniels, Dillingham, DiVincenzo, and a future first-round pick, they would have enough weapons to avoid entering purgatory during the inevitable post-Durant era.
Forbes’ Evan Sidery previously reported that the Timberwolves pursued Durant before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, so it wouldn’t be shocking to witness the franchise attempt to pry the two-time NBA champion away from Phoenix during the offseason.
