This season has been one to forget thus far for the Phoenix Suns as they have seen their playoff hopes take a major hit over the past month of the season.
Entering this season, the Suns were expected to be one of the top teams in the Western Conference. This was due to them having the highest payroll in the NBA and having a superstar trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
Instead, the Suns have had a terrible season. They currently sit 11th in the West standings with a 28-33 record, which has them four and a half games back of the Dallas Mavericks for the final Play-In spot.
With the Suns’ struggles, there are many areas of the team to blame, but one might be their lack of depth around their star trio. Durant and Booker have put together great seasons thus far and Beal has finally turned things around after a slow start.
Despite this, the Suns’ lack of depth has been a major issue and former NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas recently gave his thoughts on what Phoenix should have done earlier in the season.
“Suns are so disconnected… They needed to make a move at the deadline to bring in new energy,” Thomas posted on X.
Suns are so disconnected… They needed to make a move at the deadline to bring in new energy
Thomas made a solid point with his post. The Suns have looked disconnected all season and instead of trying to upgrade their roster at the trade deadline, they instead decided to make no moves.
While that may be the case, there were multiple reports that Phoenix was trying to trade Beal and possibly even Durant ahead of the deadline. They were also interested in acquiring Jimmy Butler, but they were unable to do so.
Instead, the Suns acquired Nick Richards to upgrade their frontcourt depth ahead of the deadline and also cleared some cap space by trading away Jusuf Nurkic. Neither of these moves have helped much as the Suns have continued to struggle.
With their struggles, it is likely that the Suns will make some moves in the offseason, which could include trading away Durant to start a rebuild.
