Novak Djokovic lost his exhibition match with Grigor Dimitrov in Bulgaria, but many on social media were more interested in the pair’s antics during the contest.
Playing an exhibition during the season is unusual for Djokovic. He is known for his strict schedule, which ensures he is in prime condition for the tournaments throughout the season.
However, Djokovic has more time available now. The 37-year-old does not play as many events as he used to. In fact, Djokovic recently said he may be done with tournaments outside the Grand Slams and representing Serbia.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion will also play an exhibition match against Juan Martin Del Potro in Buenos Aires at the beginning of December. That contest will mark the end of the 2009 US Open winner’s career.
Djokovic spoke about his reasons for accepting both exhibition invitations. He said everything Del Potro had given to the sport and how likable a person he is meant refusing his offer would have felt wrong.
Dimitrov, who feels there may be double standards in how doping cases are handled, took part in Djokovic’s controversial Adria Tour in 2020, and the Serbian said he would eventually return the favor by playing in Bulgaria.
Djokovic stuck to his word by joining Dimitrov for an exhibition in Sofia in support of Dimitrov’s foundation. It was a great occasion played in a great spirit by both men in front of an adoring crowd, who were full of admiration for both players.
Dimitrov won the exhibition 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. The result was not overly important, but the Bulgarians produced some of the excellent tennis that has seen him have a resurgence in his thirties, which few saw coming.
There was also a hilarious moment, which can be seen in the video below. Djokovic went to change his shirt at one point during the exhibition, but he did not do it in the conventional way.
Fans applauded and were in fits of laughter when Djokovic began dancing and waving the shirt he had taken off. The ten-time Australian Open champion continued to dance when he picked up his new shirt before doing some press-ups.

Dimitrov then joined in on the hilarity. slowly removing his shirt while the crowd continued to cheer before handing it to Djokovic. It was an unexpected but humorous moment that added to the positive feelings inside the stadium.
The home favorite became more sincere after the match. He thanked Djokovic and the crowd, saying it was an honor to play in front of a packed stadium that supported both men greatly.
“I am filled with happiness. I want to thank you. I am always very excited when I play in front of you.”
Djokovic also had kind words to say about Dimitrov. He described him as a friend and a brother. The former world No. 1 also said it was an honor and a pleasure to support Dimitrov’s foundation with the funds raised from the event, which sold out in minutes.
