The Toronto Blue Jays have not made big splashes in free agency. They have made some trades, but have failed to sign players and convince them to come to Toronto. However, they could still land a veteran infielder.
While listing landing spots for remaining Chicago White Sox free agents, FanSided’s Hannah Filippo predicted that Yoán Moncada would sign with the Blue Jays. The White Sox signed Moncada to a five-year, $70 million extension in 2020, but declined his $25 million option for 2025.
“Moncada would play the best with a team with an established third baseman and DH but wishes to add depth,” wrote Filippo. “If he’s healthier than expected, teams can use him as a trade piece or give him more starting chances.”
Moncada played in just 12 games last season. Injuries have kept him off the field, and the trend has continued in the offseason. He left the Premier12 tournament after a hand injury. He fouled a ball off his foot on December 15 in the Puerto Rican Winter League. He is likely not going to play again in the league as he prioritizes his health while looking for a Major League Baseball deal.
He was drawing interest from the Blue Jays earlier this offseason, and the two sides could fit well together. He has a .756 OPS and 93 home runs. He could serve as a platoon player in the infield and hopefully stay healthy enough to get into a groove at the plate. He was 5-for-20 with a home run in six games in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
