The Chiefs are about to begin their eighth postseason run with Harrison Butker as their kicker.
Butker, along with big names like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones, has been around for a whole lot of winning in Kansas City, including all three of the franchise’s recent Super Bowl seasons. He’s also been one of the league’s top kickers over that period, consistently coming through when the team needs him.
Last offseason though, Butker was in the news for reasons outside of football. The kicker became the subject of controversy at the 2024 Benedictine College graduation with his speech to the graduating class, commenting on various political and social issues.
Butker received both public support and backlash from the speech, including from his teammates — some of which didn’t necessarily agree with what he said but stood up for him as a teammate.
Here’s what Butker said in the commencement speech at Benedictine College last spring.

What did Harrison Butker say?
Butker was selected as the commencement speaker at Benedictine College, a private liberal arts college in Atchison, Kansas.
During the ceremony on May 11, 2024, Butker’s 20-minute speech commented on women’s roles in society, President Joe Biden, the LGBTQ+ community, and Pride month.
As he spoke to the graduating class about the major life and cultural issues they may face in the world, Butker said Biden “proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the sign of the cross during a pro-abortion rally.”
Later on in the speech, Butker also called for women to be willing to take on the “vocation” of homemaker, saying they’ve had “the most diabolical lies” told to them about finding ultimate fulfillment in their future careers.
Butker also urged men to be “unapologetic in your masculinity” and to be aware of “dangerous gender ideologies” in society.
