We’ve seen reports from multiple insiders suggesting that Pierce is in trouble, but a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on Sunday revealed that Pierce actually has a chance to survive.
Garafolo reports that no decision has been made about Pierce’s future yet, and there is “a lot of optimism” that Pierce could keep his job.
”I know a lot of folks think it’s a foregone conclusion that [the Raiders] are going to make a coaching change, but those folks are on the outside,” Garafolo said.
”On the inside of the building it’s sounds like there’s a lot of optimism that Antonio Pierce will continue as the head coach of the Raiders… Davis has been pleased with the last couple of weeks, understands there’s not a lot of talent, and there is a lot of youth on the roster.”
There were a lot of issues Pierce had to overcome during the season, with injuries and a straight up lack of talent being among them. However, Pierce’s decision-making was questionable, at best, on several occasions, which didn’t help.
However, as Garafolo points out, owner Mark Davis has been happy to see the team continue to fight over the last few weeks of the season and that could be enough to give Pierce another year.
“The one thing that this team has done is they’ve fought hard,” Davis said last month, per The Athletic’s Tashan Reed. “In every game, they’re fighting hard.
“That’s something that you don’t find all the time when things aren’t as good as you want them to be. That’s a positive, the way that this team has responded.”
On the flip side, Davis would not commit to Pierce when asked about his future, which led many to believe that Pierce is in fact in danger of being fired.
With Black Monday upon us, we could know Pierce’s fate very soon.
