The Philadelphia Phillies look prepared to shake things up a little this offseason. Their goal is still to remain a powerhouse in the National League, but they might make some upgrades at certain positions.
With Alec Bohm on the trading block, the Phillies could look to upgrade at third base. Alex Bregman is available in free agency.
Another way the Phillies could upgrade is to dive into the trade market. The St. Louis Cardinals are currently shopping 10-time Gold Glover and former Platinum Glove winner Nolan Arenado.
Will Leitch of MLB.com proposed the idea of the Phillies linking up with St. Louis for a potential deal.
“Arenado is a respected veteran, in his 30s, known for being beloved by his teammates who has said his one explicit goal is to win a World Series over the back half of his career. How is he not already a Phillie? The reason, currently anyway, is that the Phillies have Alec Bohm over at third base, but, for all the progress that Bohm has made over the last couple of years, he also has been discussed repeatedly a trade candidate this offseason,” Leitch wrote.
“It’s difficult to argue Arenado wouldn’t be an upgrade, and the Phillies have been very clear about their goals: win a World Series before everybody on the roster is too old to make a run at one anymore. Arenado lines up perfectly with those goals.”
The eight-time All-Star had a down year with the Cardinals. Despite hitting .272 with 71 RBI, the 33-year-old saw his power numbers decline rapidly.
Arenado was limited to just 16 home runs and had an underwhelming .719 OPS.
Still, a chance to play in a winning environment such as Philadelphia could rejuvenate him and allow him to bounce back to where he was just a few years ago.
Back in 2022, he was a National League MVP finalist thanks to a 30-homer campaign. If he can bounce back to that form, he could be a major upgrade at third base over Bohm.
It will be interesting to see what the Phillies decide to do at the Winter Meetings this week.
