The Philadelphia Phillies would surely love to keep their breakout 2024 All-Star in town, but they’ll have stiff competition.
This past season, the Phillies had eight All-Stars on their roster, but none were more appreciated than 31-year-old relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman. It had been a rocky road to stardom for the former first-round draft pick, but in his two years in Philadelphia, Hoffman found his footing.
Though he struggled in the playoffs this year, contributing to the Phillies’ untimely first-round exit, Hoffman’s tenure in Philadelphia will always be remembered in a positive light. However, there are a lot of fans hoping that it hasn’t come to an end just yet.
Now a free agent, Hoffman is expected to have many suitors, all of whom could be threats to pilfer him from the Phils. Jim Bowden of The Athletic specified the Texas Rangers as a team that could be a good match for Hoffman on Friday.
“Under general manager Chris Young, the Rangers have always looked to improve the rotation and the bullpen, and Hoffman would be a great addition as they build the back end of their pen,” Bowden said.
“Hoffman posted a 2.17 ERA and 0.965 WHIP over 68 appearances last season with the Phillies. It was his second consecutive year with an ERA below 2.50. He had 10 saves last season and ranked in the 96th percentile in chase rate, whiff rate and strikeout percentage.”
Hoffman, who was once a failed starter with the Colorado Rockies, has become one of the most desirable relievers on the market. He’d be a fearsome weapon for legendary Rangers manager Bruce Bochy to deploy in crucial late-game scenarios, and there’s even talk of some teams wanting to give him another crack at starting.
Bowden also projected Hoffman for a three-year, $27 million contract, which would fit within a lot of teams’ price ranges. It’s possible that if the Phillies really want to keep Hoffman in town, they’d have to blow that number out of the water.
