ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs will play the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Sugar Bowl after the Fighting Irish beat the No. 8 Indiana Hoosiers in South Bend.
The Irish and Hoosiers played in the brand-new first round of the College Football Playoff. The first round games are held on the higher seed’s campus, and the quarterfinals and semifinals are the New Year’s Six Bowls: Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose and Sugar.
The Dawgs earned a bye to the quarterfinals after winning the SEC Championship. The four highest-ranked conference champions receive a bye to the quarterfinals; Notre Dame cannot receive a bye, as one of three remaining independent teams in FBS.
Georgia will have to go without starting quarterback Carson Beck during their playoff run. Beck is out for the season after being injured at the end of the first half of the SEC Championship. Backup quarterback Gunner Stockton went 12 for 16 for 71 yards, threw no touchdowns and one interception to help lead the Dawgs to victory.
Georgia will face Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 1 at 8:45 p.m. The winner of that game will play in the Orange Bowl in Miami on Jan. 9.
The Dawgs and the Fighting Irish have faced off three times throughout both programs’ storied history. Georgia has won all three matchups; the latest was a 23-17 win in Athens in 2019.
The National Championship Game will be right here in Atlanta on Jan. 20.
