The Boston Red Sox may have traded one of their top prospects earlier this month, sending catcher Kyle Teel to the Chicago White Sox in the Garrett Crochet deal, but they still have plenty of young players to be excited.
Shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer, who is currently ranked as the organization’s third-best prospect via. SoxProspects. is near the top of that list.
Mayer, 22, was Boston’s first-round pick in 2021 out of Eastlake High School (CA) and has shown why he was thought of so highly when he’s healthy.
However, injuries have really impacted his progression, including a back issue that ended his 2024 season before he even got a chance to debut with Triple-A Worcester after his promotion.
Speaking with MassLive’s Sean McAdam recently, Mayer provided a positive update on his injury status at this point in the offseason.
“I’m really good. Lower back’s great,” Mayer said. “I’ve been cleared for a while now, so I’ve been progressing swinging-wise, doing my stuff and working hard in the weight room, doing whatever I can to get my body in the best position for this upcoming season.”
“I’m still ramping up,” said Mayer. “But as far as that goes, my swing feels phenomenal right now. It feels like I haven’t missed a beat, which is weird because usually when I take a week off, I feel extremely rusty. But I took like two months off and I feel great right now. I’ll be ready to (be a full-go for the start of spring training).”
In 77 games with Double-A Portland last season, Mayer hit .307 with an .850 OPS, eight home runs, 38 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
If he stays healthy, Mayer could debut with the big-league club at some point this season and could make a real impact along with other young prospects like Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell, who are also projected to debut in 2025.
