The Boston Red Sox have recently been bringing on pitchers who are dealing with season-long injuries with the hopes that they will be a steal when they return.
On Friday, the Red Sox did it again, landing left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval on a two-year, $18.25 million deal.
Sandoval, 28, was an 11th-round pick of the Houston Astros in the 2015 MLB draft out of high school, and he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels as a prospect in 2018 and debuted the following season.
In his six seasons, Sandoval has posted a 4.01 ERA, 1.392 WHIP ad 8.9 K/9 over 107 appearances (100 starts). He had UCL surgery this past June, which will knock him out through the 2025 season.
Boston hopes that he’s back to his old self in 2026 and that he can help the team become postseason contenders. They’ve done the same thing with James Paxton, Michael Fulmer and Liam Hendriks in recent years.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow should continue looking for starters for the 2025 season.
