The New York Yankees have to figure out how they plan to fill the holes around their infield – and how they will use two-time batting champion DJ LeMahieu, who is coming off the worst season of his career.
General manager Brian Cashman said LeMahieu, who turns 37 in July, remains in their plans.
A natural second baseman, he has filled in at first and third base. LeMahieu, who has won the batting title in both the American and National League, played just 67 games in 2024 because of injuries.
“I believe he’ll be healthy going into camp and will look to erase tough memories of the last two seasons,” Cashman told the New York Post’s Dan Martin. “Injuries have derailed him.”
After declining the 2025 option on Anthony Rizzo’s contract, the Yankees have just Jazz Chisholm, Jr. and shortstop Anthony Volpe set on their infield. Chisholm can play second or third base depending on how the Yankees address roster holes the rest of the offseason.
The addition of former MVP Cody Bellinger gives them flexibility with his ability to first base and the outfield.
The Yankees remain engaged in the free-agent market with slugging first basemen like Pete Alonso and third baseman Alex Bregman.
They have also explored trades for first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Nolan Arenado, who has said he would move to first base in a possible trade to a contender.
LeMahieu slashed .204/.269/.259 with two home runs last season. Signed to a $90 million, six-year deal after the 2020 season, LeMahieu is owed $30 million over the next two seasons.
