Canucks Targeting 2 Specific Player Profiles in Trade Market: Report By Antonio Losada Athlon Sports Updated December 18, 2024 6:10 AM The Vancouver Canucks are gearing up for the trade market with plans to strengthen their roster in two particular positions.
Despite holding a solid 16-9-5 record and the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, the team is actively seeking reinforcements to stay competitive in the Pacific Division where they trail the Kings and the Golden Knights. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Vancouver’s front office, led by president Jim Montgomery and general manager Patrik Allvin, has identified two priority areas: a top-four defenseman and a winger.
“League sources confirm that the Canucks are on the lookout for a top-four defenseman as well as a winger,” LeBrun reported. “And in keeping with Rutherford tradition, I would imagine GM Patrik Allvin would want to make a trade sooner than later and not wait until the March 7 deadline.
” The Canucks’ defensive needs have taken on heightened urgency following the injury to Filip Hronek, which has left a gap in their blue line. While the search for a winger is also on their radar, the addition of a defenseman is likely the higher priority. “Filip Hronek’s injury has been difficult to overcome, so that has fueled the need to trade for a top-four D,” LeBrun wrote. “Easier said than done, but I don’t think Vancouver will wait too long if it can find a fit.
” Whether Allvin and the Canucks can secure the right pieces this early in the season remains to be seen, but their activity in the trade market signals a commitment to making a push for Stanley Cup contention. Last year, the Canucksk fell short of expectations, putting together a strong regular season and winning the Pacific Division but ultimately falling in the second round at the hands of the Stanley Cup runner-up Edmonton Oilers.
