Phillies Bring Back Familiar Face! Veteran Reliever Returns for Third Time on One-Year Deal in Bold Bullpen Move

Posted on July 21, 2025 by sportsmars60@gmail.com

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Philadelphia Phillies have signed relief pitcher David Robertson. Multiple additional reporters have said that Robertson is signing a one-year deal worth $5 million with the Phillies. This comes as the Phillies have needed bullpen help since the suspension of José Alvarado. Robertson recently held a throwing session for teams interested in his services. He will be starting his age-40 season when he joins the 26-man roster once the signing is official. The Phillies have an open 40-man roster spot, but a corresponding 26-man roster move will be required to make room for Robertson.

Report: Phillies Sign David Robertson to One-Year Deal

Robertson had a 3-4 record with a 3.00 ERA and two saves for the Texas Rangers last season in 68 outings, along with a 3.67 K/BB rate and a 1.111 WHIP. He recorded a 2.65 FIP and had a 0.63 HR/9 allowed rate last season as well. For his career, Robertson has a 66-46 record and a 2.91 ERA with 177 saves in 861 games. Robertson has a 3.23 K/BB rate and a 1.156 WHIP in his career. In addition to that, he has a 2.94 FIP and a 0.79 HR/9 allowed rate. He has extensive high-leverage relief experience, but will need to shake off some rust due to not having pitched in a game environment this season and do so quickly.

Bullpen Help Still Needed With July 31st Trade Deadline Nearing

The Phillies’ decision to sign Robertson is the first step towards upgrading the bullpen. This will be the veteran righty’s third stint with the club. Robertson has a 1-4 record with a 3.30 ERA in 29 regular-season outings for the team. During their 2022 run to the World Series, Robertson allowed one run in eight appearances. Furthermore, Robertson has a career 3.04 ERA and one save in 42 postseason outings. While signing Robertson is a start, the Phillies should be prepared to do more to upgrade the bullpen heading towards the July 31 trade deadline. Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski should make additional moves to help the team if he wants them to have a real chance to win the World Series.
