Washington hosted a Toronto Maple Leafs team that was without their star Auston Matthews, and while the Caps played well for 40 minutes, they weren’t able to hold a two-goal lead in the third period, as the Leafs forced overtime and won 4-3.
The Capitals started off strong as Taylor Raddysh and Dylan Strome scored the team’s two goals in the first period, while Aliaksei Protas added his sixth tally of the season in the middle frame.
This contest also featured three video reviews that waived off goals, as Toronto had two tallies that didn’t count, while John Carlson launched a rocket from the blue line that gave Washington a goal, before it was waived off due to goalie interference.
William Nylander cut the Leafs’ deficit to 3-2 with under four minutes left in regulation. With under a minute remaining, the Leafs pulled their goalie, but the Capitals missed on several chances before Nic Dowd took a neutral zone penalty. Mitch Marner scored a power play goal to tie it up at 3-3.
The game-winning goal came late in overtime when John Tavares took the puck on a breakaway and snuck it past Logan Thompson, right after the Caps had several chances themselves.
Turnovers played a major factor in the contest as Washington had 17 giveaways, which will certainly be another lesson for the team the rest of the way.
This was only Washington’s second overtime game of the season.
