After a season finale in which she lost the 1st position in the WTA ranking, Iga Swiatek wants to end her year in the best possible way, trying to obtain a historic first triumph for her Poland in the Billie Jean King Cup 2024. Despite the disappointment of the early elimination in the groups of the WTA Finals 2024, a tournament in which she was defending the title of reigning champion, the Polish player’s season is not over yet, in fact.
Iga, meanwhile, recalled her rise to the top of women’s tennis, which coincided with the retirement of former number one Ashleigh Barty. The Polish tennis player expressed her respect for the Australian, saying:
“I didn’t understand what happened. Ash was the undisputed leader, she played the best tennis. Even though I knew where I was going to hit her, it was still difficult to deal with her shots. At first I found her choice strange, I felt it was a great loss for the sport. I have a lot of respect for her. Also, I had a feeling of what the end of her career would mean to me. I had been number 2 for only a few days and suddenly I had the opportunity to climb to the top of the rankings.”
Swiatek then talked about her national team’s chances of success at the Billie Jean King Cup, analyzing: “I’m very happy and proud of all of them, it was a very fun week. I’m happy that this time I managed to take my team to the final. We hope to complete the feat in Malaga, but I’m very proud of what we achieved.”
