Adidas are seemingly having a second attempt at designing an Arsenal away kit inspired by one of the club’s classic change kits from the 1990s, four years on from their first
A leaked Arsenal away kit hints that Adidas will have another shot at a shirt inspired by the club’s iconic 1995/96 ‘lightning’ design.
Four years after their first attempt with the 2021/22 third kit, the manufacturers again appear to be using a lightning bolt pattern in light and dark blue shades. However, there seemingly will no longer be a scarlet outline around the motifs, as they added in their first attempt.
There appears to be very little red on the kit, with the logos and sponsors in metallic silver. Only the detailing down the sides, on the cuffs, and the back of the collar seem to be red.
Footy Headlines also claims that the Arsenal cannon will continue on the away kit after returning this season following the club crest featuring on last season’s away shirt. This campaign is the first time it has been on more than one shirt, suggesting it could again adorn all three of them, plus the goalkeeper kits.
Despite being an iconic kit, the 1995/96 season the Gunners wore it in was hardly successful, despite Dennis Bergkamp arriving from Inter for a club-record fee that pre-season.
Arsenal lost to the eventual League Cup winners Aston Villa in the semi-finals and exited the FA Cup in the third round to Sheffield United before rallying under Bruce Rioch to finish fifth on the final day of the Premier League season to secure the final UEFA Cup spot.
The 2021/22 season, when they wore their ‘lightning-inspired’ third kit, was also eerily similar. They also lost in the League Cup semi-finals to the eventual winners Liverpool, lost in the FA Cup third round – this time to Nottingham Forest – and finished fifth in the league to qualify for the Europa League after not playing in Europe during the campaign.
