“I Can’t Believe It” – Roosters Star Stuns Rugby League World with RLPA Award Triumph!
Sydney Roosters star Mark Nawaqanitawase has capped off a stunning debut NRL season by being named the RLPA Rookie of the Year, following a breakout campaign that firmly established him as one of rugby league’s brightest young talents.
The 24-year-old outside back, who made the switch from rugby union to the NRL at the start of 2025, wasted no time proving his worth in the Roosters’ colours. Blessed with speed, strength and aerial ability, Nawaqanitawase quickly adapted to the pace and intensity of the league, becoming a crucial weapon in Trent Robinson’s backline.
Throughout the season, Nawaqanitawase dazzled fans and pundits alike with his blistering runs and finishing prowess, regularly turning tight contests in the Roosters’ favour. His ability under the high ball, combined with his knack for breaking tackles and creating opportunities out of nothing, saw him rack up a highlight reel that has left many tipping him for representative honours in the near future.
Speaking after receiving the award, Nawaqanitawase admitted the transition from rugby union had been a challenge but credited the Roosters staff and teammates for helping him thrive.
“It’s been an incredible year,” he said. “Coming over from union, I knew it was going to be tough to adapt, but the boys and the coaches backed me from day one. To be recognised with this award by the RLPA is something I’ll never forget. It makes me want to work even harder.”
Roosters head coach Trent Robinson praised his young star’s impact, describing him as a player with “natural talent and a relentless work ethic.”
“What Mark has done in his first season is exceptional,” Robinson said. “He’s not only shown his skill and ability but also his hunger to learn and improve. That’s what makes him so exciting for the future of our club and the game.”
The Rookie of the Year honour cements Nawaqanitawase’s place as one of the NRL’s most talked-about newcomers, and Roosters fans will be thrilled at the prospect of seeing him continue to develop in the years ahead.
With his fearless style of play and eye for the spectacular, Nawaqanitawase’s debut season has been nothing short of electric – and his RLPA recognition suggests that this is only the beginning of a special NRL career.
